3 Popular Materials for Metal Roofing
Metal roofs have grown in popularity over the past several years and with good reason—they’re extremely durable compared to more conventional roofs, such as asphalt shingles. The three most popular types of metal roofs are copper, steel, and aluminum. Before hiring a roofing company and choosing a type of metal roof for your home or business, there are certain things to consider.
Metal Roofing – Copper
One of the most attractive choices for curb appeal in metal roofing is copper. Over time it will develop a beautiful bluish green patina — think Statue of Liberty. Copper roofing is extremely durable, lightweight, and doesn’t require maintenance of any kind. One drawback of copper is that it is relatively soft and can be dented or scratched fairly easily. It’s also much more expensive than other types of steel roofing, which means it may not be practical for most home and business budgets.
Metal Roofing – Steel
Steel roofs are a relatively affordable option and they can last 50 years or even longer. The roofs are known for being leak-free and able to stand up in very severe weather conditions, including hurricane-force winds. Because steel can eventually rust, manufacturers apply an anti-corrosive coating to steel roofs, which needs to be reapplied every 20 years or so by a roofer. Steel is a good option for either a home or a business.
Metal Roofing – Aluminum
In some ways, aluminum roofs offer more advantages than either copper or steel roofs. Aluminum is stronger than copper, just as durable as steel, and more affordable than copper. Like steel, it will require an application of anti-corrosive coating to resist rust damage. It’s also energy efficient because it emits heat and reflects light, making it a smart money-saving option for a home or business.
